Vintage Factors

The 2014 vintage will be remembered as a great vintage for Chardonnay in the Edna Valley. Bud break started very early, at the end of February, and with drought concerns and salt content in the soil increasing, stressing the vines, vintners started to irrigate before veraison. Higher than average temperatures in summer made for a shorter growing season than normal, with an unusual early harvest beginning late August. The Chardonnays produced from this vintage exhibit lots of concentrated ripe flavors supported by elegant and delicate flavors. Early picking was important to preserve minerality in the berries while keeping the acidity in balance. This typical Californian vintage, made full, richly textured wines.
